CARE strong history in child survival programming will strengthen CARE in Tanzanias capacity in maternal and child health through CRHP. In addition, CRHP will enchance CARE International capacity in partnership and institutional strengthening. The CARE program in Tanzania, as a new country program, exemplifies CARE strategic focus on partnership. CRHP involves developing capacity in the public and private sector as a means of establishing an improved and locally sustainable maternal health system.

Jozani-Chwaka Bay Environment Project works with the Zanzibar government to create, develop and manage the Jozani Forest and Chwaka Bay Mangroves Nature Conservation Area. The goal of the project is to create the conservation area and cultivate a sense of ownership in communities bordering the area by insuring that they benefit from the income generated through eco-tourism activities. The project also raises awareness of the importance of protecting natural resources through extension, training and on-site conservation education.

CARE began working in Tanzania in April 1994, in response to the crisis in Rwanda and the subsequent influx of refugees into the Kagera Region of North-western Tanzania. Over the ensuing 15 years CARE Tanzania developed innovative education, health, microfinance, and environmental programs across most regions of the country. CARE Tanzania is now beginning implementation of its new 10-year strategic plan. Under this plan, CARE Tanzania’s programming will be restructured and further developed in programs to address the needs of three impact groups: poor and vulnerable people, especially women and girls, dependent on natural resources in areas with severe environmental restrictions; women and adolescent girls of reproductive age in rural underserved areas; and school-aged girls in rural underserved areas.
